The rite starts with both phrases, intoned by the cantor/soloist, whichwill be echoed in
response by the congregation.
Then, there are verses, each verse followed by the first response, and subsequently,
then the next verse by the second phrase.
Regardless of how many verses, each of the congregation's response will alternate each phrase.
The rite concludes when the cantor/soloist reverts back to "Gather Us in Mercy, Lord", which will be echoed by the congregation, most likely 2 or 3 times.

The Kyrie, is also an intonation and response. You are already familiar with this penitential rite in English:
Lord, have mercy (resp. Lord have mercy)
Christ, have mercy (resp Christ have mercy)
Lord, have mercy (resp. Lord have mercy)
The Kyrie is the same thing, only in Greek.
Kyrie Eleison (resp. Kyrie Eleison)
Christi Eleison (Christi Eleison)
Kyrie Eleison (resp. Kyrie Eleison)
